Most pages about this either oversell it or confuse it with something else. What follows is the plain version, including the parts a training provider has an incentive not to tell you.
NABCEP is the North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners. It is a certification body: it writes examinations, administers credentials and sets the rules for who may claim them. It does not install anything, it does not train anybody, and it does not license contractors.
A credential is not a licence. A licence is permission from a regulator to perform work. A credential is evidence to an employer that you know something. NABCEP issues credentials. Ontario's Electrical Safety Authority and provincial certification deal in permissions. Neither substitutes for the other.
The Associate is not the Professional. When an inspector or a tender document asks for "NABCEP certification", it usually means one of the professional certifications, not the Associate. The Associate is the entry credential: no experience requirement, one examination, and NABCEP's own description is that it qualifies you to work in a supervised capacity. It carries no digital badge. Being straight about that is more useful to you than inflating it, and anyone inflating it is telling you something about themselves.
| Thing | Who issues it | What it lets you do |
|---|---|---|
| Construction Electrician certification (309A in Ontario) | The province | Perform electrical work as a certified tradesperson |
| Electrical contractor licence and ESA notification | ESA | Contract for and file electrical work legally |
| NABCEP PV Associate | NABCEP | Demonstrate PV knowledge to an employer. No trade prerequisite |
| CSA solar photovoltaic certification | CSA Group | Not currently offered. Requires trade certification first, and the programme is under revision |
Read that table from the bottom up and the gap becomes obvious. The Canadian PV credential sits behind a trade certificate — and, as of October 2026, behind a closed door as well.
CSA Group confirmed to us in writing on 15 October 2026 that it is not offering the Construction Electrician (NOC 7241) solar photovoltaic certification at this time, while the programme is under revision, and that it has no date for when the revision will be finished. Its product page is still published and carries no notice, which is why it is worth saying here. Anyone already certified keeps their certification — what is closed is the way in. CSA Group's page for the certification, checked 15 October 2026.
So NABCEP PV Associate is not merely the easier credential for a great many people in this country. For the moment it is the one that is actually being issued.
If you already install solar full-time and your employer does not ask for it, the Associate may add little. Consider sitting the examination on its own and skipping the training, or going straight at the professional route and starting to document your hours. We will say that to you on the phone as readily as here.
Our listing in NABCEP's provider directory — provider number PVARTP-0877.
No. It is an independent certification body. Its credentials are industry-recognised, not statutory.
No. Provincial certification and the Electrical Safety Authority govern that, and a NABCEP credential does not change it.
NABCEP, because the CSA certification is not currently being offered. CSA Group confirmed that in writing in October 2026, while the programme is under revision. When it returns it will still need a provincial Construction Electrician certificate first, and it will still speak more directly to Canadian employers. Today, NABCEP is the one you can actually earn.
No. We are a registered training and examination provider, number PVARTP-0877. NABCEP is a separate body and it writes, delivers and scores its own examinations.
