Installation is the part of solar work with the most regulation attached, and the answer is provincial rather than national. Here is how the layers stack up and which one applies to you.
Three different things get called "installer certification" and they are not interchangeable. One is a trade certificate. One is a contractor's permission to file work. One is a knowledge credential. You can hold the third without the first two, which is why the question confuses people.
A grid-tied PV system connects to a building's electrical service. In Ontario that work is performed by a certified electrician and filed by a licensed electrical contractor through the Electrical Safety Authority. There is no credential from any certification body, North American or Canadian, that substitutes for that. If someone tells you a four-day course lets you wire and file a grid-tied system in Ontario, they are wrong, and expensively so.
An electrical contractor licence is a business authorisation, separate from an individual's trade certificate. A company needs one to hold itself out as doing electrical work and to submit notifications. This is where credentials live, and where most of the actual learning is. The mechanical and PV-specific electrical content — array layout, attachment and flashing, string configuration, inverter selection, commissioning, fault-finding — is not covered by a general electrical certificate. An electrician who has never built an array is competent at the wiring and new to almost everything else.
Two credentials speak to this layer, but only one of them can be earned right now. NABCEP PV Associate requires nothing first. CSA Group's solar photovoltaic certification requires a provincial Construction Electrician certificate first — and is not currently being offered at all.
CSA Group confirmed to us in writing on 15 October 2026 that it is not offering the Construction Electrician (NOC 7241) solar photovoltaic certification at this time, while the programme is under revision, and that it has no date for when the revision will be finished. Its product page is still published and carries no notice, which is why it is worth saying here. Anyone already certified keeps their certification — what is closed is the way in. Worth saying plainly, because it changes people's plans. Site surveying, system design support, sales and specification, procurement, project coordination and operations work are all real jobs in this industry and none of them requires a trade certificate. The PV knowledge credential is often the only thing asked for. If the trade route is not available to you, that is where to look rather than deciding the industry is closed.
We teach the PV knowledge layer: installation practice, design against the Canadian Electrical Code, commissioning and maintenance, and the safety content a crew needs. We do not issue trade certificates, we are not a contractor licensing body, and we do not pretend a course replaces an apprenticeship. What we can do is make you useful on a crew, and give you something verifiable to show the person hiring.
Mechanical work, racking and module placement are not the electrical scope. The electrical connection is, and in Ontario that must be performed and filed by the appropriate certified and licensed parties. Treat the division as provincial and check locally.
It demonstrates knowledge. It is not a provincial licence and does not replace one. NABCEP's own wording for the Associate is work in a supervised capacity.
In this market, commonly a PV credential plus current safety tickets. The credential gets you the interview and the safety tickets get you onto the roof.
Trade certification is provincial, with interprovincial recognition for some trades. CSA Group's solar specialism is national, but it sits behind a provincial trade certificate and CSA Group confirmed in writing in October 2026 that it is not currently offering it.
