Renewal, and the CEU rule people get wrong.

Continuing education can replace a written exam at renewal. It cannot replace a field exam unless BPI’s policy for that certification says so — and for the Energy Auditor, BPI says it never does.

Getting certified is the part everybody sells. Staying certified is the part that catches people out — and for one BPI certification it is considerably harder than getting it in the first place.

The rule that surprises everyone

Continuing education can, on most BPI certifications, replace the written exam at renewal. It cannot replace a field exam unless BPI’s own policy for that certification allows it — and for the Energy Auditor, BPI is explicit: “There is no allowance for bypassing the field exam in order to renew the EA certification.”

So “I'll just do my CEUs” is correct for BA-P and QCI, partly correct for BA-T and IDL, and wrong for the Energy Auditor.

What each certification needs to renew

How CEUs actually work

  • Roughly one unit per training hour. BPI’s QCI handbook describes CEUs as generally awarded at a 1:1 ratio with training hours.
  • They must align with the Job Task Analysis for the certification you are renewing. Training that is interesting but off-scope does not count.
  • They expire. On the QCI, BPI states CEUs expire five years after they are earned. Units banked long before a renewal window may no longer be usable.
  • They are approved course by course. BPI approves individual courses for continuing education credit. That is the only thing BPI approves about training — it does not approve, accredit or endorse training programmes, providers, curricula or instructors.
  • Renewal opens six months before expiry on every certification we have checked, and an open complaint at expiry blocks it.
Do not let a prerequisite lapse underneath you

Two BPI certifications depend on another one staying live. The BA-P is deactivated if the BA-T expires, and the QCI requires an active Energy Auditor at renewal, not merely at certification. In both cases the dependent credential is easy to renew and the one underneath it is not. Diarise the harder date.

Our continuing education courses

We are building a continuing education catalogue for Canadian certificate holders — the people who currently find that the renewal training available to them is American, priced in US dollars and written for American code. Planned subjects, and we are being deliberately plain about status:

Why there are no CEU numbers in that table yet

Because BPI has not approved these courses, and putting a credit value next to an unapproved course would be exactly the sort of unauthorised certification-related claim BPI’s brand policy prohibits. When a course is approved we will publish its credit value and the designations it counts toward, and not a day before. If you need units this renewal cycle, tell us which certification and when it expires and we will point you at training that is already approved, including other people’s.

If your certification expires soon

  1. Find your expiry date and work backwards six months — that is when your renewal window opens.
  2. Check what your certification actually needs. The table above, or ask us. The answer for the Energy Auditor is different from everything else.
  3. If a field exam is required, book it early. Field exams need a proctor, an approved site and a date that suits both, and “my certificate expires in three weeks” is not a schedulable constraint. Book a field exam →
  4. Clear any open complaint. An open complaint at expiry blocks renewal outright, whatever else you have done.

An unsuccessful renewal attempt ends the current certification immediately, so the margin you want is months, not days.

Common questions

Can CEUs get me out of a field exam?

Sometimes, and for one certification never. BPI's work-experience and bypass policies cover some field exams; for the Energy Auditor, BPI states there is no allowance for bypassing the field exam in order to renew. CEUs there replace the written exam only.

How many CEUs do I need?

It depends on the certification. Thirty for Building Analyst Professional and Energy Auditor, twenty-four for Healthy Home Evaluator, six for Quality Control Inspector. Building Analyst Technician does not use CEUs at all — it uses 1,000 hours of field experience, proctoring or whole-house field training.

Do CEUs expire?

Yes. BPI's QCI handbook says CEUs expire five years after they are earned, so units banked long in advance of a renewal window may no longer count.

Are your CEU courses approved?

Not yet, and we will not print a credit value next to a course BPI has not approved. When approval comes through we will publish the value and the designations it counts toward. If you need units this cycle, tell us and we will point you at training that is already approved, including other providers'.

Does BPI approve training providers?

No. BPI approves individual courses for continuing education credit, course by course. It does not approve, accredit, endorse or recognise training programmes, providers, curricula or instructors — that is in BPI's own brand policy.

When can I start renewing?

Six months before your expiry date, on every certification we have checked. An open complaint at expiry blocks renewal, and an unsuccessful renewal attempt ends your current certification immediately — so leave months of margin, not weeks.

My certification already expired. What now?

Tell us which one and when it lapsed. The route back differs by certification and by how long ago, and it is a question for BPI rather than a centre — but we can tell you what the handbook says and administer whatever exam the answer requires.
