What BPI certification actually costs.

BPI does not set the exam fee and does not collect it — its own handbooks say so. Here is who charges what, the figures BPI does publish, and the cost that never appears on anybody’s price list.

There is one fact that explains every confusing answer you have had about what BPI certification costs: BPI does not set the exam fee and does not collect it. Its own handbooks say so, repeatedly. The fee is set by whichever Test Center administers your exam.

Straight from BPI’s handbooks

“BPI does not set schedules for its Test Centers, nor does BPI collect the exam fees.” And, on the certifications that need a practical evaluation: exam fees “vary from Test Center to Test Center”, so candidates are told to contact a local centre for pricing.

So when you read a BPI certification price online, you are reading one American centre’s price, not BPI’s. There is no national BPI price list to compare it against, and anybody presenting one as official is guessing.

What BPI itself charges, and it is a short list

BPI publishes a direct price for its online certificate exams — the ones with no field component, which BPI sells and delivers itself. These are in US dollars and are BPI’s own figures, not ours.

Fees BPI publishes directly, in US dollars, from BPI’s certifications list updated 27 April 2026. BPI gives two figures where it charges more for credit card than for bank payment.

Healthy Housing Principles (HHP) US$119, or US$122.57 by credit card Digital US$119. Print US$139 plus shipping.

Total Building Performance (TBP) US$150, or US$154.50 by credit card—

BPI publishes no fee for any of the certifications that carry a written or field exam — Building Analyst Technician, Building Analyst Professional, Energy Auditor, Quality Control Inspector, Infiltration & Duct Leakage and the rest. Those are priced by the Test Center, which is why asking BPI gets you sent back to a centre.

What a seat with us costs

Our BPI exam fees are being set now that the centre is standing up, and they will be published on this page the same way our NABCEP seat fee is — one inclusive figure in Canadian dollars, identical for candidates who prepared with us and candidates who did not. Until the figure is on this page, ask for it and you will get a number, not a discovery call.

BPI sells and delivers this one directly at the price in the table above. We do not resell it at a markup; we will tell you how to buy it from BPI and prepare you for it if you want that.

Why we will not mark up BPI’s own certificate exam

Building Science Principles is sold by BPI, delivered online by BPI, and costs US$119 from BPI. Reselling that to a Canadian at a padded price because the BPI website is awkward would be the easiest money on this page, and it is still not money we want. Buy it from BPI. If you want help passing it, that is a separate thing you can decide separately.

The cost nobody puts on a price list

Until now, the realistic cost of a BPI field credential for a Canadian was not the exam fee. It was the exam fee plus a trip:

  • Return travel to a Test Center in one of the American states where field exams are administered
  • A night or two of accommodation, because field exams are scheduled on the centre’s calendar and not yours
  • One or two days of lost billable work
  • A border crossing with diagnostic instruments, and the customs conversation that can come with it
  • And then the same again at renewal — every three years on most certifications, every five on the Energy Auditor, whose field exam BPI says can never be bypassed

That is the line item a Canadian centre deletes. It is worth more than any discount on the exam fee itself, and it is the honest reason to book here rather than the flag.

Other costs to budget for, so nothing surprises you

  • Prerequisite certificates. BA-T needs Building Science Principles. BA-P needs BA-T. QCI needs an active Energy Auditor. Each prerequisite is its own fee.
  • Renewal. Every three years on most certifications, five on Energy Auditor and Quality Control Inspector. Renewal is an application with fees, plus either continuing education or an exam.
  • Continuing education. Thirty units over the cycle on BA-P and Energy Auditor, twenty-four on Healthy Home Evaluator, six on Quality Control Inspector. What that means in practice →
  • Interpretation, if you need it. BPI permits a pre-approved interpreter at the candidate’s own expense, with exam time doubled, requested at least thirty days ahead.
  • Instruments. A field exam is performed with real equipment. Confirm with us what is provided and what you bring before the day, not on it.
Prices move, and these are other people’s prices

The US dollar figures above are BPI’s and BPI can change them at any time. Our own fees will be set in Canadian dollars with taxes extra, and a seat fee that covers anything priced in US dollars tracks the exchange rate — if a rate move changes your price we will tell you before you pay, not after. Check BPI’s own figures before you budget.

Common questions

How much does BPI certification cost?

There is no single answer, because BPI does not set or collect the exam fee for any certification with a written or field exam — the Test Center does. BPI does publish direct prices for its online certificate exams, and those are in the table on this page.

Why can't BPI just tell me the price?

Because BPI is the certifying body, not the seller. Its handbooks say plainly that it does not set Test Center schedules and does not collect exam fees, and send candidates to a centre for pricing.

Is Building Science Principles cheaper through you?

No. BPI sells and delivers it directly for US$119, and we are not going to resell BPI's own product at a markup. Buy it from BPI.

Will your BPI fees be published like your NABCEP fee?

Yes, on this page, in Canadian dollars, one inclusive figure per exam, identical for everyone. Until they are here, ask and you will get a number rather than a sales call.

Do I pay BPI separately as well?

For certifications with a written or field exam, your exam fee goes to the Test Center. Prerequisite certificates such as Building Science Principles are bought from BPI directly, and renewal applications are paid to BPI. We will tell you which payments go where before you commit to anything.

What about the cost of travelling to a US test centre?

That is the cost a Canadian centre removes, and for most candidates it was larger than the exam fee — travel, a night or two, lost work, and instruments through customs, repeated at every renewal.

Are taxes included?

Canadian fees will be quoted with taxes extra, as everything else on this site is. BPI's US dollar figures are BPI's own and are quoted as BPI publishes them.
